Naturalization is the legal process by which a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) applies for and is granted US citizenship.

To be eligible for naturalization,

you must be

  • 18 years old or over

  • lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years or 3 years, if married to a US citizen

  • Be able to demonstrate continuous residence in the US

  • Be able to demonstrate physical presence in the US

  • Be a resident of the state that you plan to file naturalization with at least 3 months

  • Of good moral character

  • Be able to read, write and speak basic English

  • Understand basic US history and governance

  • Be willing to take an Oath of Allegiance to the US

IMPORTANT. Please note that these are the most common eligibility requirements for naturalization. There are many exceptions to these rules and even other qualification criteria  (e.g., Pacific Islanders, US Military Members). For this reason, it is important to talk to an immigration attorney to determine whether you are truly eligible for naturalization.
